Numeral-word combinations

A combination of numerals and words may be used to express large numbers and consecutive numerals.

EXAMPLE:

+ An estimated 2 million people are affected.

+ Their losses were estimated to be $5 million a month.

+

To avoid ambiguity in number ranges, repeat the word expression.

+

EXAMPLE:

+ The coverage affected 2 million to 3 million patients.

+ Not:

+ The coverage affected 2 to 3 million patients.

+

When decimals are combined with the words hundred, thousand, million, billion, this may be transcribed in one of two ways:

+

EXAMPLE:

+ The study included 3.6 thousand individuals.

+ or

+ The study included 3600 individuals.

+ They lost $2.2 million the first quarter of 2009.

+ or

+ They lost $2,200,000 the first quarter of 2009.
