The above table illustrates a very easy-to-follow system for roman numerals. When a roman numeral precedes another of greater value, it dimishes the value of the following letter. A bar over the roman numeral indicates the value is 1000 times greater, as shown on the chart above. (Roman numerals will not be reviewed in detail – these are taught in elementary school. It’s unlikely you’ll be adding and subtracting them – a basic understanding is all that’s necessary.)
